Sipping Cappuccino at Omotesando Koffee

December 10, 2014

Omotesando Koffee, a cubic gem in the heart of bustling Tokyo, borders between the traditional, metropolitan, and modern. Tucked away on a side street in Omotesando, Omotesando Koffee is based at the entrance of a traditional styled Japanese home in a completely average-looking neighborhood. But once you walk through the old-fashioned gateway, you find yourself immediately transported to a minimalistic, modern, and all-encompassing visual experience.

Omotesando Koffee took over this post-WWII traditional Japanese home to house their storied Coffeeshop

The man on a caffeine mission, Miki-san of Omotesando Koffee

Walking into the house, I expected feeling cramped, but I was pleasantly surprised. The clean lines of the bar along with the simplistic decoration and lighting created a space that made you forget you were actually in a traditional Japanese house in the middle of metropolitan Tokyo. And as popular as this place is, there were always people coming in and out, so huge lines never actually form, and the small room felt like a huge exhibition space.

Minimalist interior design screams Japanese heritage

Watching the barista only enhanced the experience. Never missing a beat or using any unnecessary movements, Miki-san masterfully crafted my cappuccino in a calculating and efficient manner. Having a taste, I could feel the coffee’s smooth texture and rich flavor. The sweetness level was perfect (just a hint of sugar) and there was absolutely no after-taste. And of course, I had to order their signature cube baked custard cake to go with my coffee. Reminiscent of a brownie back in America, the baked custard kept with the minimalist theme of the café with its cubical shape. It’s hard and chewy exterior complimented the mochi-like consistency of the inner custard, complimenting the coffee perfectly.

While a little hard to find, this surreal coffee shop is worth the stop if you’re ever in Tokyo. For chasers of the minimalist aesthetic and a good cup of coffee, Omotesando Koffee is the perfect exhibition for the senses. Venture out and discover the finer side of craft coffee.
