With the help of Inception's very capable hands, we were able to produce a limited run of these Horsehide Natural Indigo keyholders. Using Japanese Natural Indigo derived from the Indigofera plant that is native to Japan, the Persicaria Tinctoria, a powdered concentrate of the natural dye is produced by fermenting and then breaking down the leaves through a year-long process.\u003cspan class=\"gmail-Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHorse Butt leather is essentially some of the toughest, hardest and most durable leather that money can buy. Taken from the rump of each horse, it is a finite resource that often commands a high price from leather wholesalers and tanners. Often confused with Shell Cordovan, the difference is Cordovan is sourced from the same rump area of the horse, but is further shaved down yielding the additional fiber layer beneath the horse butt leather.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLocated just north of Tokyo, the saddle leather used for the production of these keyholders is sourced directly from the famed Japanese leather tanner, Tochigi Leather. Opting to use Bend (horse butt) leather which is known as a premium leather featuring firmness and durability, the leather cuttings are vegetable tanned for at least a month or longer than normal at the request of the brand - resulting in a leather that is full of character and packing that patina-potential. Additionally, the leather is dyed with the fibers intact, resulting in further rigidity. The leather goes through a process of glazing using a high-pressure iron after it has been dyed. Designed through a traditional lens, the OD Indigo Selvedge Sashiko Haori combines a proprietary fabric with meticulous details that encompass close to two years of development. \u003cspan\u003eClocking in at 14.5oz’s of a proprietary Sashiko Selvedge we developed from the yarn with our friends at Nihon Menpu in Ibara, Okayama, this piece allowed us to flex our creativity and experience to develop a piece that is simply not available on the market otherwise. We love Haoris, but wanted something a little more substantial in terms of fabric weight and structure than our current offerings online.\u003c\/span\u003e As a salute to our Selvedge heritage, the \"self-finishing edge\" is purposely featured throughout the inner layer of the Haori, along with the locker loop just beneath the collar area.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"\"\u003eWhile preserving the classic aesthetics of the traditional Japanese Haori, we made a few adjustments to the construction to enhance the wearability of the garment. By combining a classic set-in front with a raglan back sleeve construction, the haori maintains its sharp silhouette from the front while allowing greater freedom of movement and comfort through the back and arms. Two details we have integrated from past OD+ projects make a welcome appearance in this piece. First we have added handwarmer pockets that are lined with a gold \"Hokko\" Satin fabric, a detail we previously reserved for our \u003ca class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayamadenim.com\/en-fr\/products\/od-sda-ame-sashiko-selvedge-bomber-jacket\"\u003eOD+SDA Indigo Sashiko Bomber Jacket projects\u003c\/a\u003e, which is inspired directly from souvenir jackets (or \"Sukajan\") fabrics from the post-WWII era.  It also wouldn't be an OD piece without our custom hardware and in this case, we feature a single \"OD\" embossed snap-button at the front which is a departure from the traditional drawcord closure often seen in traditional Haoris. We are always on the prowl for compositions that aren't readily available on the market, and we found this particular fabric tucked away in the stock room of a fabric dealer in Okayama. The 25m of vintage 1980s fabric we discovered had heavy sun damage and markings across the entirety of the piece. Not enough material to use for full garments, and too damaged to work with in its current state, but the composition itself was simply too beautiful to let go. The Asagi (light blue) base paired with the Kon (deep indigo) Sashiko threading produced a two-tone effect that we knew deserved a second life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe brought the remnant to our friends at Nihon Menpu in Ibara, Okayama and asked them to reverse engineer it from scratch. The result is a faithful recreation of the original composition and color hues, woven for us exclusively and substantial enough in weight to hold up to the demands of a workwear silhouette.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe silhouette and details are drawn from a vintage pair of painter pants from the 1980s that we picked up along the way. We made an original pattern based on that pair, preserving the utilitarian bones that defined the American painter pant tradition, including the tool pocket, hammer loop, and the extra knee pad fabric layer that reinforces the high-wear zones on the legs. It is a genuinely functional cut that we felt deserved a fabric with enough character to do it justice. This is one of those combinations where the traditional Japanese fabric and the vintage American workwear silhouette bring out unexpected qualities in each other.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pocket bags are lined with Takeyari Canvas Deadstock Indigo Block Check Sailcloth, a special fabric we have held onto from the now-defunct Takeyari factory. \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSince their inception in 1888, they have been supplying ships and boats with sail cloth, as well as artists for painting canvases, and now more recently for clothing and luggage. With the indigo-dyed nature of these pocket bags, they are guaranteed to age incredibly well with wear\u003c\/span\u003e. Seeing this fabric live on inside an OD original piece feels especially meaningful. The result is a collection of four Natural Indigo Sashiko Lined Canvas Tote Bags that bring together materials and makers from the world we know best, built to a size and standard that we felt was genuinely missing from what was already out there.\u2028The body is comprised of a No. 8 canvas sourced from Okayama, the same region that was Japan's largest producer of Hanpu (帆布) sailcloth long before denim took over as the area's defining textile identity. The No.8 fabric weave chosen was the perfect middle-ground found in order to balance weight and rigidity for this bag project. The OD logo is screenprinted directly onto the canvas in color, kept clean and legible against the natural fabric face.\u2028\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lining is where things get interesting. Each bag is lined with a Natural Indigo Sashiko fabric from Tsujimura-Ai, whose Kasezome-dyed (Skein-dyed) cloth has appeared in a number of our \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.okayamadenim.com\/products\/od-zt-natural-indigo-box-check-sashiko-down-vest\"\u003ecollaborations\u003c\/a\u003e and continues to be one of our favorite materials to work with. Because of the way the bag is constructed, it is fully reversible, meaning the Sashiko lining can be worn facing outward if you want to lead with that side of the story. Four fabric variations are available across the collection, giving each bag its own character while sharing the same meticulous construction and base canvas fabric.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe handles and trim are constructed from thick cowhide leather throughout. During the design phase, the trim was added with a specific purpose: to give the bag the structural integrity a canvas tote at this size genuinely needs. Paired with the rigidity of No. 8 canvas, the leather keeps everything composed and upright regardless of what is loaded inside.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn that note, we deliberately sized these larger than the tote bags we have encountered so far, most of which we found too small to be genuinely useful in daily life. \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eThese are bags you can actually pack - whether that means a day trip, a gym run, or a haul from the flea market.
