Applying a fabric inspired by the rich history of Japanese culture to this piece known as Sashiko (刺し子, directly translates as 'little stabs'), the indigo-dyed cotton base of the fabric has indigo cotton yarns running in parallel & horizontal lines throughout.

Woven on a dobby loom in Okayama & inspired by traditional Sashiko, this weave is commonly referred to in Japan as a “Sashi-ori”. As the fabric features a double face weave, the material “swells” up quite a bit after the wash process, providing an almost 3-dimensional and texture aesthetic to the garment.

Sashiko was historically a sewing technique used to repair well-worn sections of traditional kimonos and workwear, but early on was adopted as a way of also decorating patterns on garments.
