While originally developed as a dyeing method by India in the 7th century, Shibori (絞り) is derived from the word Shiboru (Japanese for 'to wring') and the practice has continued in Japan for hundreds of years, with earliest examples of tie-dyed garments dating back to the eighth century.

While exact methods vary, parts of fabric or garment are taken and secured by hand prior to the dyeing process. These sections will resist the indigo dye which as a result form the contrasting patterns of the final product.
