Expect the unexpected with PBJ, we've come to learn that after all these years of working closely with the brand. A Cotton/Polyurethane mix fabric (98%/2%) is generally the composition of your girlfriend's stretch denim, not an Indigo dyed Sashiko fabric. Pure Blue Japan go lightweight with the latest Indigo dyed Sashiko fabric, and deliver them in one wash to ensure great fit while also accentuating the Indigo dyed threading used for the Sashiko. The 2% of PU really helps for the shirt to be form fitting, and is one of the best fitting shirts that PBJ has dropped.
Applying a fabric with a rich history in Japanese culture to this piece, known as Sashiko (刺し子, directly translates as 'little stabs'), the indigo dyed cotton base of the fabric has undyed white cotton yarns running in parallel lines throughout. Sashiko was historically a sewing technique used to repair well worn sections of traditional kimonos and workwear, but early on was adopted as a way of also decorating patterns on garments.
