The coveted denim composition of Indigo Hank Dyed yarns, processed meticulously by Japanese Indigo artisans who have been recognized by the country as living treasures, has been woven into Selvedge denim by PBJ since the early days of the brand’s history.
As we’ve explained in the past, dyeing the yarn to the core requires countless dye cycles of dyeing, sun drying & repeating the process. To make jeans for the AI series, yarns are dyed over 20 times to achieve the deep indigo hue featured on those pairs.
In the past we’ve done Natural Indigo garment dye projects, where we overdye an existing piece in Natural Indigo. PBJ take the process a step further, by Hank dyeing the thinner yarns intended for the production of chambray and lighter fabrics in Tokushima, to weave something completely new. The yarns are spun on shuttle looms in Okayama to produce this proprietary 6oz. Double Natural Indigo Selvedge Chambray.
In the case of this new fabric development, both the Warp & Weft of this composition feature Kasezome (Hank dyed, or Skein dyed by hand) yarns which have gone through the tedious dyeing process 7-8 times to yield a Natural Indigo yarn that is dyed to the core.
As this is a new Selvedge development, fade samples are still unavailable. Given the nature of the yarns and structure of the weave though, the indigo hue of the fabric will slowly lighten with extended wear, similar to the AI series jeans.
