The Shinsengumi (新選組, New Select Brigade) were a special police force formed during the late 1800s under the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Following the Kanagawa Treaty and the opening of the country to the west in 1854, Japan gradually descended into political instability particularly between the Imperial loyalists based in Kyoto and the Tokugawa Shogunate based in Edo. Following a meeting with the then Emperor Komei in 1863 in which allegiance shifted from that of the Shogun to the Emperor, 13 members of the original brigade sent to protect the Shogun formed the Shinsengumi which gradually grew in numbers, eventually splitting into three separate factions lead by Serizawa Kamo, Kondo Isami and Tonouchi Yoshio.

"Goryōkaku" (五稜郭) - or "Five-Point Fort" in Hakodate is the site of what is regarded as the last major battle in the Boshin War, prior to the completion of the Meiji Restoration in 1869. Based in Hokkaido, the "Ezo Republic" comprised of the final armies and leaders of the Tokugawa Shogunate, of which the remaining members of the Shinsengumi were part of. Ferocious fighting took place over a week with the majority of the revolutionary force either being killed or captured in the final stand.

Closing the final chapter of the Shinsengumi story, the final release in Samurai's limited series features the 18oz. extra-Slubby "Makoto" Selvedge fabric that was created from scratch, just like the grassroots formation of the Shinsengumi. The eye-catching shade of blue and red seen in the Selvedge ID was carefully selected by Samurai to pay homage to the instantly recognizable light-capri blue (浅葱色, Asagi-iro) haori that the Shinsengumi donned on top of their battle regalia. The red color is symbolic of the red "Makoto" battle standard that was carried into battle.
