Screen printed original Indigo Invitational logo on chest and back
Endurance and fortitude are guiding principles in the world of well-made denim, and that goes double in the Indigo Invitational Fade Competition. When we were looking for a design for our first contest tee, we wanted to use images that connected tangibly with these principles. We found the perfect fit in some of the iconography surrounding Le Mans (the world’s most famous endurance race). For the last 98 years, race fans and racers have descended on Le Mans, France, for a gruelling 24-hour race—the ultimate test of performance machines and those who drive them. Like the Indigo Invitational, Le Mans is not about speed. It’s not about who crosses the finish line first but, rather, who covers the greatest distance over that 24-hour period.
The back of the shirt draws on an iconic 1959 poster (designed by Alexis Kow) that celebrates Panhard’s victories in that year’s running of Le Mans. On the side of our car, we’ve placed the number 73 (a nod to the year that Levi Strauss wedded rivets and work pants, creating the blue jean).
On the front of the shirt is the Indigo Invitational crest. Once again, we’ve chosen a piece of automotive and racing history as our starting point. Carozzeria Touring Superleggera, a Milan-based coachbuilder that was responsible for some of the most elegant touring car bodies ever produced, also had what we feel is one of the best-looking badges ever to grace a hood ornament. We’ve adapted and modernized this crest, borrowing the shape and crown, but changing it enough that we feel comfortable calling it our own.
