Over the years, we have been lucky enough to produce some amazing pieces using one of our favorite naturally occurring dyes, Kakishibu (Aka persimmon fruit) such as the OD+PBJ Indigo x Kakishibu Sashiko Selvedge Pants. For S/S 2024, Pure Blue Japan bring to the table their PER-EX Indigo x Kakishibu "Extra Slub" 5 pocket Jeans. Featuring irregular yarns, the "EX'' denim includes an obnoxious amount of slub due to the low-tension weave of the fabric, and accentuates the streaky rain-like texture seen throughout the jeans. While the warp threads have been dyed to a deep indigo hue, it is the combination of Kakishibu weft yarns that give these jeans the beautiful earthy brown hue that can be seen in the fabric.

Kakishibu has historic roots in Japanese craft and tradition which dates back to the early 13th century when it was first introduced to Japan from China. Annually in late August, unripe persimmon are harvested as their tannin or juice is extracted. Used as a multi-solution tool, Kakishibu was used to cure hangovers, for wood lacquering and even as a clearing agent for sake, to name only a few of the varied applications of the historic dye.

The jeans also feature a brown deerskin leather waistband patch, embossed 5 metal button fly, blue selvedge ID, and PBJ's famous back right pocket embroidered leaf logo in a gold color which perfectly complements the stitching found throughout the jeans.
