This tee stands as a powerful tribute to Japan’s postwar Sukajan (souvenir jacket) heritage. On the back, the garment showcases an intricately layered puff print so detailed it could easily be mistaken for hand embroidery. Each stroke of the tiger’s fur is rendered with lifelike depth, the print’s 3D-texture achieved through multiple overlaid passes. This gives the artwork a tactile, embroidered quality.
Beneath the design lies one of The Flat Head’s signature technical achievements: the “three-needle, one-off” neck construction. Inspired by vintage American tees and refined through the brand’s own experimentation, this method employs thick No. 20 cotton thread stitched in three passes - two along the rib and one along the body. The result is a neckline that resists stretching even after years of wear.
The fabric itself is woven using one of Japan’s few remaining circular knitting machines from the 1960s, known as Maru-ami-ki. The THC series uses robust 14-count cotton yarns, exceptionally thick by T-shirt standards.
