The Studio D’Artisan "Awa Sho-Ai Kakishibu" Selvedge Jeans celebrate Japan’s proud heritage of natural dyeing through the fusion of Awa Sho-Ai (阿波正藍) indigo and Kakishibu (柿渋) persimmon dye. The Awa Sho-Ai dyeing method, passed down from the Edo period, uses a unique fermentation process to produce complex hues - not just standard blue, but deep shades of green-blue, crimson, and black-indigo that evolve beautifully over time. Achieving the rich color requires a meticulous cycle of dyeing, airing, and drying, repeated multiple times to build depth and vibrancy. The final step involves washing the fabric around 30 times, refining the color into a deep, balanced tone.

This type of indigo also carries a natural anti-bacterial and insect-repelling property, which historically made it a prized choice for clothing and textiles. Complementing this is Kakishibu dye, applied to the weft yarns through a method known as "tennen shibori" (natural sun dyeing). Exposure to sunlight and air oxidizes the persimmon dye, causing its color to evolve, adding depth and a distinctive aged character. The thicker, slub-textured Kakishibu yarns further enhance the fabric’s unique hand feel, creating a more structured, artisanal Selvedge fabric compared to standard 15oz. jeans.

*Please note that this is an unsanforized pair of denim, and the raw version will shrink up to 10% with the first soak, and will then stretch out with wear. Learn more about Unsanforized denim through ourRaw Denim Care Guide, and also through this infographic! All measurements are based on the way we measure, according to our Fit Guide.

**The one wash variant is commerically washed in a factory, and thus maximizes the shrinkage of the garment. This variant will only stretch with wear, with no additional shrinkage expected from the listed measurements below.
