As we celebrate 15 years of Okayama Denim, we're stoked to introduce our very first collaboration with the good folks at Omoto Denim. Despite being a relatively young name in the Japanese denim scene, Omoto have wasted little time making an impression, bringing a fresh perspective to traditional denim manufacturing through their distinctive fabrics and considered approach to design. Having welcomed the brand into the OD fam just a year ago, the opportunity to work together on something entirely our own felt like a natural next step.
At the heart of the collaboration is our proprietary 14.5oz. "Overcast Nep" Selvedge Denim, a fabric developed around two characteristics we were particularly keen to explore. The first is its unusual color composition, pairing a traditional indigo-dyed warp with a gray-dyed weft. While natural and lighter-colored weft yarns are familiar territory in denim, the use of gray introduces a decidedly different character, lending the fabric a deeper, more subdued appearance that inspired the "Overcast" name.
The second is the remarkable texture. One of the qualities that first caught our attention about Omoto was their willingness to experiment with Nep-heavy denim, producing fabrics with a wonderfully irregular, almost unruly surface. We wanted to take that same approach and push it further through our own interpretation, combining the unconventional dye composition with an abundance of nep to create something that feels familiar in its foundations, yet quite unlike conventional indigo denim. The resulting fabric possesses a distinctive depth and texture, with plenty of character to appreciate before the first signs of wear even begin to emerge.
Rather than limiting the fabric to a single silhouette, we've developed the Overcast Nep series into three complementary pieces. Two jean cuts, Slim Straight and Loose Straight, offer distinctly different interpretations of the same denim, while a classic Type 1 Jacket completes the collection. Naturally, a collaboration celebrating 15 years of OD wouldn't be complete without a few signature details. Proprietary OD+ hardware features throughout, including custom 22mm "OD" embossed metal buttons, silver "+" rivets, our specially developed OD+OM rayon tab and 15th anniversary woven label.
