The Shinsengumi (新選組, New Select Brigade) were a special police force formed during the late 1800s under the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Following the Kanagawa Treaty and the opening of the country to the west in 1854, Japan gradually descended into political instability particularly between the Imperial loyalists based in Kyoto and the Tokugawa Shogunate based in Edo. Following a meeting with the then Emperor Komei in 1863 in which allegiance shifted from that of the Shogun to the Emperor, 13 members of the original brigade sent to protect the Shogun formed the Shinsengumi which gradually grew in numbers, eventually splitting into three separate factions lead by Serizawa Kamo, Kondo Isami and Tonouchi Yoshio. Notorious for their ruthless policing of Kyoto, the band of men originally dubbed the "Mibu Ronin" garnered a fearsome reputation and eventually were known as the "Mibu Wolves" or "Ōkami" (wolves in Japanese) by locals and adversaries alike.

Our 8th collaboration model with Samurai features the 18oz. extra-Slubby "Makoto" Selvedge fabric that was created from scratch in 2021, just like the grassroots formation of the Shinsengumi. Garnering a reputation through Samurai's original "Shinsengumi" collection models, we felt this final return of the fabric deserved the "Ōkami" moniker as a salute to the fearsome band of warrriors from the Shinsengumi. The eye-catching shade of blue and red seen in the Selvedge ID was carefully selected by Samurai to pay homage to the instantly recognizable light-capri blue (浅葱色, Asagi-iro) haori that the Shinsengumi donned on top of their battle regalia. The red color is symbolic of the red "Makoto" battle standard that was carried into battle.

Featuring a relaxed top block, with an aggressive taper starting from above the knee, the Comfort Tapered cut was designed by Okayama Denim for Samurai Jeans. Imagine the top block almost as relaxed as a regular straight pair of jeans, with a combination of high rise & ample thigh room. With the taper starting from above the knee, the jeans slim down in the calves to a narrow leg opening.

My third pair of Jeans from OD, service and communication always very good. These are a very different cut for me, was a learning experience trying unsanforised, i think they turned out well and are very comfy. The slub is crazy, and these jeans breathe well because of the low tension in the fabric. Has quite a neppy texture. Most suitable for fellas with big thighs and butt, go true to size with this cut or you may have to bring the waist in 1" like I had my tailor do for my pair. Cheers guys

Really awesome jeans! I own several pairs of Japanese denim and these are probably my favorite. Great texture, full of cool details like selvedge ID throughout, sashiko pocket bags and lined back pockets. Okayama Denim service was great too. They shipped a little late after my order was placed but this was over the holidays so it's understandable. When they did ship they arrived very quickly and in great packaging. Excited to see future Okayama Denim collabs!

This is my first OD collab jeans and it is perfect with the Samurai Makoto. I love the loose weave, texture, finishing, and the jeans are very comfortable immediately after the first soak. Best of all is the OD Comfort Taper, which allows you to enjoy Samurai with a more modern fit.

These are sick! Probably the slubbiest pair of jeans I own now. The texture is amazing and I’m sure they’ll morph into a unique pair of jeans. I’m 5’5” 170lbs, I went with the 32’s and they fit perfectly. I was worried how they would fit after the first soak, being unsanfronized. They didn’t change too much. For my size I have large quads and butt, yet these jeans have enough room for me to move around and the aggressive taper gives me that slim silhouette. I’ll need to get them hemmed of course, that’s why I didn’t add a photo.
