"Seigaiha" is the ancient Japanese pattern of overlapping waves spreading gently and endlessly across a surface, and is the visual inspiration behind this new 15oz. slub Selvedge from Samurai. The reference is not decorative but structural. The fabric itself is designed to evoke the calm, rhythmic texture of that pattern through the interplay between two very different yarns.

The warp uses a No. 5 count rope-dyed indigo yarn with a deliberately strong unevenness built into it, producing the slub character and deeply saturated blue that defines the face of the fabric. The weft takes a different approach entirely, using a slightly finer No. 8 count indigo yarn dyed through a separate process to a distinctly deeper concentration. Woven slowly on vintage looms, the contrast between the thick, uneven warp and the finer, darker weft creates a textile with immediate visual complexity. Over time that complexity deepens. Because the two yarns are dyed differently and sit in different orientations within the weave, they fade at different rates, and as the warp begins to break down and lighten, the deeper weft indigo gradually asserts itself, pushing through to create an increasingly unusual and personal denim surface that only emerges through years of wear.

The pattern used for this model was developed specifically for this model, cut to present a clean and upright silhouette while remaining comfortable through a slightly higher rise and a relaxed hip that allows genuine freedom of movement. The top button is the brand's red-painted "Hinomaru" button, representing the sun reflecting off a calm sea, a detail chosen specifically to tie the overall concept together.
