As we age both as individuals and as a company, we realize the importance of making conscious decisions, as our growth also directly impacts the earth.
In 2019 we started with an idea. We wanted to take recycled bamboo and create a fiber yarn from it. The next step was to blend that bamboo yarn with cotton to create a denim composition that manages to be more sustainable than a common 100% cotton denim twill. Supporting us through the trial and error were Big John Jeans, a denim company renowned for being the first Made in Japan Selvedge brand. Together, after multiple sample runs, we present to you a brand new silhouette developed by Okayama Denim coupled with a proprietary 12oz. Cotton x Bamboo Selvedge developed specifically for these jeans. It was important for us to tell this story alongside Big John, as we enter what we hope will begin a more socially & environmentally conscious era for Japanese Selvedge denim.

As we do with our more comprehensive collaborations, we brought on board our favorite genius behind the pen, Nathan Spoor. We wanted the design to highlight the bi-blend of Cotton & Bamboo, and Nathan really completed the design package with his magic. The "Bamboo Forest" imagery featured on the Natural Cowhide leather patch was done completely free hand (including the 竹 Kanji for Bamboo), without the help of any technology. The design was then scanned and uploaded as an Ai file to create the final imagery. Still using Big John's classic back pocket rayon tag, we switched out the usual red for a subtle green to highlight the use of Bamboo in the production of these jeans. Further highlighting the inclusion of Bamboo in our design are the pocket bags as well as the surprise green stitching on the inside of the leg opening. 

The New Tapered cut is a complete revamp from any previous Big John cut to date. We took the previously available Slim Tapered cut from Big John, and reworked it for a more flattering final aesthetic. The Rises & Thighs are now roomier than previous BJ Slim Tapered's, with the taper beginning just above the knee and continuing down to the leg opening.
