Japanese Natural Indigo, also known as Aizome, is a traditional dyeing technique that has been used for centuries in Japan. What makes this dye so special is not only its rich, deep blue color but also the unique process used to create it.

Unlike synthetic indigo dyes, which are made from petrochemicals, Japanese Natural Indigo is made from the leaves of the indigo plant, known as Indigofera Tinctoria. The leaves are harvested and fermented in a process that can take up to several weeks to produce the dye.

What is particularly special about Japanese Natural Indigo is the way it fades over time. Unlike synthetic dyes, which can lose their color quickly, Japanese Natural Indigo has a unique quality where the color fades and softens over time, creating a beautiful patina that adds to the character of the fabric. When applied to Sashiko fabrics, this creates a beautiful effect where the embroidered patterns become more pronounced as the fabric takes on a soft, worn look.
