Continuing on their ongoing journey exploring botanical dyes, the Momotaro “Shikon” Selvedge fabric takes it's color inspiration from one of Japan's oldest and most revered natural dyes. The name "Shikon" (紫根) refers to the root of the purple gromwell plant, traditionally used in Japan to produce a distinctive purple with warm reddish-brown undertones. Momotaro selected the colour specifically to offer something different from the more subdued tones typically associated with the autumn and winter collections, resulting in a rich, earthy purple with considerable depth.
Shikon has a particularly distinguished place in Japanese history. Alongside indigo and safflower, it is regarded as one of Japan's three great traditional natural dyes, and its rarity made purple a color associated with status and importance. Purple was famously designated as the highest-ranking colour under the Twelve Level Cap and Rank System established in the 7th century, further cementing its historical significance. For this denim, Momotaro employs a botanical dyeing process to draw out the natural depth and subtle irregularities characteristic of plant-derived color, giving the fabric an appearance that is both unusual and distinctly Japanese.
