Taking inspiration from history, the Studio D’Artisan “Choju-Giga” Sukajan is a piece that bridges centuries of Japanese visual culture with the rebellious spirit of post-war street style. Its inspiration comes from the legendary “Choju-Giga” (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals), a set of picture scrolls created around 800 years ago that are often referred to as "Japan’s first manga". These scrolls, which depict rabbits, frogs, and other animals in lively, often comical scenes, are remarkable not only for their wit but also for their ability to tell stories without a single written word. In many ways, they mark the beginning of visual storytelling in Japan, a lineage that stretches all the way to today’s manga and anime.

Studio D’Artisan reimagines this cultural treasure through the lens of the Sukajan (souvenir jacket), a jacket style born in the aftermath of WWII that blends Japanese embroidery and fabrics with American-influenced silhouettes. For this model, the brand has developed an original fabric using “printed kasuri” techniques, a method that draws on Japan’s deep textile traditions. The result is a cloth that is at once playful and refined, embedding the narrative richness of Choju-Giga into a wearable canvas.

The interior lining continues this theme, employing kasuri-inspired printwork that retells the scrolls with a Studio D’Artisan twist. Look closely, and alongside the familiar rabbits and frogs, you’ll spot the brand’s iconic pig character woven into the scenes, adding a wink of humor and originality.

As a reversible sukajan, the jacket offers two distinct personalities in one garment - one side showcasing a bold, statement-making design, and the other a more understated but equally character-rich option.

*Model is pictured wearing a size 40. He weighs 59kg (130 pounds) and is 178cm (5’11”) tall.
