"Kakishibu-zome", or persimmon dyeing, has been practiced in Japan for more than 900 years, with the reddish-brown dye traditionally used for clothing, as well as for its reputed antibacterial and deodorising properties. Often referred to as "sun-dyeing," the color continues to oxidise and deepen when exposed to sunlight and air, developing a richer character with age.

For this particular denim, Studio D'Artisan starts with its original 15oz. GL3 denim, then applies a hand-dyeing process using Kakishibu made from persimmon fruit aged for more than three years. The fabric is repeatedly saturated with the dye, wrung out, and dried under direct sunlight before the process is repeated again and again. Rather than pursuing an even color, the craftsmen deliberately allow the irregularities inherent to hand dyeing to remain, creating subtle variations in tone and texture that simply cannot be reproduced by a machine.

An especially interesting detail is that the reverse side of the denim is used as the face of the jeans. This allows the unevenness of the hand-dyeing to become even more pronounced, while the deep reddish-brown Kakishibu tone interacts beautifully with the pronounced slub texture of the GL3 fabric. The result is a particularly rugged and organic appearance, with each pair carrying its own subtle variations. As the jeans are worn, the natural dye will continue to evolve, with exposure to light, air, and everyday use contributing to further changes in color and character.
