A marriage of traditional dyeing methods & texture kicked into overdrive, Studio D'Artisan's latest MA-1 iteration features on of our favorite naturally derived dyes - Kakishibu.

For this MA-1 jacket, Studio D'Artisan uses persimmon dye that has been aged for over three years. The extracted juices must then undergo a one-year fermentation and storage process, in order to remove impurities such as organic acids prior to being refined as a dye. Each individual jacket goes through a labor-intensive process of being garment dyed by hand. One dip process involves immersing the jacket in the Kakishibu dye before wringing it once/twice and line-drying. This same process must be repeated 7-8 times in order to achieve the desired hue of brown.

One of the charms of Natural Kakishibu dye is the variation of the final resulting hue of the garment. Factors such as the quality of the fruit, the fermentation method, dyeing season and even the weather all tie into the dyeing process of this garment.

Developed for US Air Force pilots in the early 1950s, the new MA-1 design spec featured several changes to its predecessor - the L-2 model, as air combat moved into the Jet age.

Taking into account the tightness of the cockpit as well as the plethora of instruments that surrounded the pilot, the shortened hem length and trim design sought to improve comfort in flight while features such as the utility pocket featured on the left sleeve were added to reduce any unnecessary protrusions from the jacket.

Loved by mil-spec fans around the world, Studio D'Artisan have maintained all the bells and whistles of the MA-1 jacket and elevated a classic military garment by giving it the Kurozometreatment. Extremely easy to wear, the luxury does not end with the outer shell. Each jacket is rayon lined in order to maximize comfortability for the wearer.
