The Taisho era, roughly the first quarter of the twentieth century, was a period of genuine cultural transformation in Japan. Western influences were arriving and reshaping the arts, and the graphic traditions that had defined the Edo and Meiji periods before it were giving way to something new and hybrid. The people who lived through this shift, caught between the established world they knew and the modern one taking shape around them, developed a sensibility that Japan now refers to as "Taisho Roman", a romantic, nostalgic idealism expressed through a distinctive visual language that blended Japanese and Western aesthetics in ways that still feel fresh today. The color combinations and illustrative style of that era are the starting point for the original print motif this tee, which depicts a geisha rendered in Taisho Roman's characteristic palette, a figure who represents one of the most enduring threads of Japanese cultural identity surviving from that transitional moment into the present.
Crafted using carefully selected high-quality raw cotton, this fabric is knitted meticulously on the "Daimaru" circular knitting machine, which has been used in Japan since the early 20th century.
