The Flat Head Honeycomb Thermal Henley (Black)

Made from 100% cotton, this thermal fabric features a distinctive vertically elongated honeycomb knit with an open, mesh-like structure. Exceptionally soft and highly elastic across its width, the material offers a comfortable fit that moves naturally with the body. The unique knit construction also provides excellent moisture absorption and breathability, drawing moisture away from the skin and allowing it to dissipate through the textured surface for a consistently dry, comfortable feel.

The honeycomb structure serves a different purpose depending on how the garment is worn. As a standalone piece, the open knit encourages airflow and breathability, making it comfortable across a range of temperatures. When worn as a base layer, the raised texture traps small pockets of air between the fabric and the skin, creating an insulating layer that helps retain warmth during colder months.

Another defining characteristic is the fabric's directional elasticity. While the honeycomb knit stretches generously across the width, it resists excessive stretching vertically, helping the garment maintain its shape and preventing the hem from becoming overly stretched with repeated wear.

Particular attention has also been paid to the construction around the neckline. The Flat Head employs its signature three-needle, one-needle-offset stitching technique, using substantial 20-count cotton thread to reinforce the collar and minimise stretching over time. Working with such thick cotton thread on a soft, highly elastic thermal fabric requires considerable precision, making the construction as impressive as the material itself.

For additional comfort, the seams are sewn using a vintage 1960s Union Special flatseamer. This specialised machine produces exceptionally flat seams with minimal raised edges, reducing irritation where the fabric comes into contact with the skin. The result is a remarkably comfortable garment that retains the traditional character of vintage thermal underwear while benefiting from The Flat Head's exacting standards of Japanese craftsmanship.
