Studio D'Artisan back with a bang with the first arrivals coming in this week from their S/S 2022 collection. Drawing inspiration from what Lee originally developed as their “Westerner” series, and being that the brand is from the West, SDA maintain that playful approach that we’ve come to love them for with the release of the "Easterner" series which showcases ancient dyeing techniques. Also dropping as the temps start to pick up, SDA's latest tees celebrate Japanese cultural heritage in textiles and artwork.

Studio D'Artisan Sumi Dyed "Easterner" Jacket

Celebrating Japan's rich culture of Kusaki-zome (plant-based dyed) garments, SDA come through with their latest "Easterner" Jacket, dyed in Sumi Ink. The moniker "Easterner" pays homage to the popular Lee 100-J "Westerner" Jacket from the 1960's~70's which used a White Cotton Satin fabric base.
Traditionally, Sumi is produced from a combination of pinewood soot, animal glue and perfume. A common misconception is that the final product is a liquid, when in fact the ink is only the result of rubbing a solid ink 'stick' against an inkstone with water. Thus, the original production of ink sticks requires a painstaking process of thoroughly mixing the raw ingredients before kneading and shaping them in wooden molds. The ageing process can take from a few months to several years.

Studio D'Artisan "Mount Fuji" Indigo Tie-Dye Tee

We think it's fair to say that the "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" artwork from the "36 Views of Mount Fuji", is the most iconic piece of art in Japan's history. Tapping into quintessentially Japanese dyeing techniques, SDA feature this emblematic piece of art on the front and back as a discharge print. Each individual tee has gone through a hand tie-dyeing "Shibori" process bringing out variegated hues of Indigo throughout each tee.

Studio D'Artisan Indigo Dyed Logo Print Tees

A mainstay in SDA's lineup, the latest USA cotton body tees come dripping in rope-dyed Indigo. We're particularly fond of the Spring themed motif with an interesting symbol that caught our eye. This is actually an ancient version of the Kanji for "Pig" (豚), with stylistic cues taken from woodwork carvings often found in Japanese shrines. Along with the symbol, touches of red print featured in the Sakura and "Hinomaru" (Japan's national flag) give this version of the tee just the right amount of color pop.

Studio D'Artisan "Noragi Sashiko" Pocket Tees

SDA continue to branch out their ongoing projects, with the "Noragi Sashiko" series seeing a revamp on the fabric front for 2022. Experimenting with various colorways, the Osaka OG's eventually settled on refreshing Blue and Black patterns for their S/S collection.
Following the same Indigo and Sumi dyeing techniques that the brand have employed for their latest jacket and tees, the new Blue and Black iterations of the Noragi Sashiko chest pockets pair beautifully with the intricately dyed fabrics.
