SDA are no strangers to the shirting game and have continued to innovate when it comes to combining traditional Japanese fabrics with classic work wear styling.
Delving deep into the history of textiles in Japan, the origins of Kasuri (or 絣) fabrics date back to 1200AD during the reign of the Ryukyu Kingdom (now modern day Okinawa).
Kasuri is the Japanese term for a fabric that has a color range of dyed fibers to create patterns and images within a textile. It is similar to Ikat dyeing, a form of resistance dyeing.
Following the invasion of the Ryukyu Kingdom in the 1600s, Kasuri techniques entered Japan and proceeded to spread north, eventually making it as far as Nara by the mid 1700s. In tandem with increasing cotton production, villages began to adopt and produce their own Kasuri textiles with local production continuing until the 1930s when the War Cabinet eventually diverted all necessary resources to wartime expansion.
Thus, an indefinite hiatus of production of these fabrics continued even once the Second World War had ended. In peacetime Japan, few people had the necessary means and time to weave and dye Kasuri fabrics. As such, we owe it to dedicated artisans and craftsmen in modern-day Japan for revitalizing such beautiful textiles from a bygone era.
