Long before the term "jeans" became commonplace, denim and canvas work trousers were known simply as waist overalls. Drawing inspiration from the workwear of the 1880s, Big John revisits this early chapter in clothing history with its Sea Island Cotton Selvedge Duck Waist Overalls, combining period-inspired construction with one of the world's most prized cotton varieties.

The original waist overall emerged from the traditional bib overall, dispensing with the upper portion while retaining the practical, hard-wearing construction required of everyday work clothing. Often worn with suspenders, these early trousers laid much of the groundwork for what would eventually become the modern five-pocket jean. Big John's interpretation preserves that rugged character while refining the proportions for contemporary wear.

At the heart of the design is American Sea Island Cotton, an exceptionally rare variety prized for its unusually long, fine fibres and remarkably supple hand feel. Historically cultivated in the Caribbean before being introduced to the coastal regions of the United States, Sea Island Cotton earned a reputation as one of the finest cottons available. Following devastating pest damage, American cultivation effectively ceased in 1922, before being revived in 2017, nearly a century later.

What makes this particular fabric especially interesting is its colour. Rather than being dyed brown, the canvas retains the natural colouring of the raw American Sea Island Cotton itself. The resulting earthy tone carries subtle variations and depth that come directly from the cotton fibres, giving the material an understated character that conventional dyeing would struggle to replicate.

The heavyweight duck canvas is slowly woven at high density on vintage shuttle looms, producing a substantial fabric with a pronounced structure and firmness. Despite its rugged appearance, the natural suppleness of Sea Island Cotton remains apparent beneath the surface. Initially crisp and structured, the canvas will gradually soften through wear and washing, becoming more comfortable as it conforms to the wearer's body.
