"Matsusaka Momen" is one of Japan's most quietly distinguished textile traditions, a cotton textile that has been woven in the Matsusaka region of Mie Prefecture for over 400 years. Historically prized by Edo-period merchants who wore it as a subtle display of refined taste beneath more formal outer layers, the fabric is characterised by its fine striped patterns and the particular softness that comes from its long production heritage. Omoto Denim bring this tradition into their own arsenal with a natural indigo stripe shirt that draws the best out of both the cloth and the dyeing process.
The fabric is kasezome-dyed in Natural Indigo, a method where yarn is dyed by hand before weaving. Because Kasezome allows the dye to penetrate each individual skein differently depending on its position and exposure during the dyeing process, the resulting yarns carry subtle variations in indigo depth from strand to strand. When woven into the vertical stripe pattern of the Matsusaka Momen, these variations produce a stripe that shifts and breathes across the cloth rather than presenting a flat, uniform colour. No two panels are identical, and the natural indigo base means the shirt will fade and develop its own character with wear in a way that synthetic dye simply cannot replicate.
