Featuring a proprietary Jacquard Knit developed by L&W for F/W '20, the fabric's contrasting jacquard weave is made possible by customizing a French Terry knitting machine, of which only two exist in Japan. Playing into the extended experience and knowledge of the vintage French Terry knitting machine, the artisans are able to manipulate the machines to output an incredibly unique and rare textile.

Kakishibu has a deep rooted history in Japanese craft culture & tradition, dating back to the early 13th century when it was first introduced to Japan from China. Annually in late August, unripe persimmon are harvested as their tannin or juice is extracted. Used as a multi-solution tool, Kakishibu was used to cure hangovers, for wood lacquering and even as a clearing agent for sake, to name only a few of the varied applications of the historic dye.

A Union Special 4-needle flat seamer machine commands all the seam construction, while a 2-needle machine is responsible for attaching the ribbed material to the garment. Starting with an Ivory cotton base, the sweatshirts are dyed by hand, one piece at a time. Given the contrasting jacquard nature of the fabric and weave, the penetration of the natural Kakishibu dyed is also variegated, celebrating a range of natural Kakishibu hues.

Dyed in a 100% natural & additive-free Kakishibu dye derived from the tannin of a persimmon fruit, the garments use a natural dyeing process usually reserved for plant-based dyeing. This allows for the right balance of color and fabric texture. The delicacy of a natural Kakishibu dye can be realized upon contact with sunlight, darkening the brown color hue of the garment over time.

As this is a garment dyed piece, please note that this garment may stain other articles of clothing, given the nature of the Kakishibu dye. This bleeding or transfer of color onto other garments can happen when it comes into contact either directly or during the wash process. We would recommend washing this garment alone, or with similar colors.
