Featuring a form of the iconic Shippō pattern (seven treasures in Japanese) first popularized as a form of art during the Heian Period (794-1185). It was not until the Edo period (1603-1868) that the pattern made it's way as an ornate design onto women's kimonos, birthing the use of this motif on garments. This form of Shippō is called Hoshi Tsunagi (or star chain linked pattern), connoting the repeating pattern of stars going through the fabric.
The base is an Indigo dyed fabric with tonal blue sashiko threading running vertical throughout the fabric. The fabric then goes through a print process with the application of the reoccurring Shippō pattern running throughout. Also, this isn't something intentional when designing, but after sampling and washing the piece, we learned that the fabric is wrinkle resistant! No need for an iron job on this guy, which is a nice relief.
For the design details, the chainstitch construction and runoffs feature our OD colors (Red & White), as well as the button threading which we opted for red which created the beautiful contrast we were looking on the black wood lacquered buttons. For that little touch of contrast, we had the factory color coordinate the off white color of the Shippō print for just the bottom button as well as the top button on the cuffs.
