The "Rain" series by Studio D'Artisan is a tribute to the rich tradition of Japanese indigo-dyed fabrics and the enduring art of sashiko stitching. This collection is deeply rooted in Japanese culture, reflecting the historical significance of indigo-dyed textiles as everyday garments.

The distinctive indigo-dyed fabric called "Ame Gasuri," or "Rain Kasuri," plays a central role in this collection. Ame Gasuri is renowned for its unique and intricate patterns that capture the essence of falling raindrops. It is created by using Kasuri threads only in the warp, allowing the weaver to craft irregular, broken straight lines that mimic the appearance of rain falling. This traditional Japanese motif connects wearers to the natural elements and rural landscapes of Japan, offering a warm and rustic texture.

Kasuri (or 絣) is the Japanese term for a fabric that has a color range of dyed fibers to create patterns and images within a textile. It is similar to Ikat dyeing, a form of resistance dyeing. Ikat is the predecessor to Kasuri techniques and was first developed during the reign of the Ryukyu Kingdom (modern-day Okinawa), around 1200AD. Traditional Japanese fabrics have been produced with these techniques for centuries by highly skilled artisans and is a renowned and revered material for the Japanese.

Woven on a vintage loom in Okayama & inspired by traditional Sashiko, this weave is commonly referred to in Japan as a “Sashi-ori”. As the fabric features a double face weave, the material “swells” up quite a bit after the wash process, providing an almost 3-dimensional and texture aesthetic to the garment.

Sashiko was historically a sewing technique used to repair well-worn sections of traditional kimonos and workwear, but early on was adopted as a way of also decorating patterns on garments.
