Founded in Sendai City, Miyagi Kogyo began its journey with a vision to create exceptional footwear. At its peak, the company boasted a workforce of nearly 2000 employees. Unfortunately, the ravages of the Second World War led to the destruction of their factory. Undeterred, Miyagi Kogyo rose from the ashes, rebuilding in Nanyo City, Yamagata Prefecture.
In 1964, Miyagi Kogyo made significant strides by entering into a technical partnership with A. Baker & Sons from the United Kingdom. Actively embracing authentic techniques, the brand established itself as a leading shoemaker in Japan.
Within the Miyagi Kogyo atelier, a unique environment fosters the creativity of its artisans. Young talents, some with European apprenticeships under their belts, work towards independence. Outside regular working hours, they have unrestricted access to the workshop's machinery and materials, allowing them to dedicate late nights to their craft.
Embracing the ethos of creativity and independence, numerous sub-brands have emerged under the Miyagi Kogyo umbrella. Jamvaida is a relatively fresh development that started in 2021. In that time, they have showcased a phenomenal level of attention to detail and second-to-none construction of their shoes.
Made from a leather so durable it was used by the US Army during WWII for mechanical gaskets, Chromexcel® has been in production by the fine folks at Horween for over a century. With a mind-boggling 89 independent steps that take approximately a month to complete, Horween combines chrome and vegetable tanning techniques to create a leather with unique pull-up, durability and endless potential for patina.
