Traditionally in Japan, cotton fabrics were considered an indespensible commodity. Kimonos were not always seen as simply a statement, reserved for special occasions. Historically, Kimono were worn everyday through harsh Winters and scorching Summers. As such, clothing was re-used repeatedly and never thrown away. Even when completely worn out, fabrics were carefully stitched and patched back together.

Seeking to recreate the beautiful and intricate patchwork patterns seen in the past, Studio D’Artisan have created their latest “Indigo Noragi Sashiko” collection by creating a proprietary jacquard weave featuring various fabrics and a vertical/horizontal Sashiko stitch running through ought. The fabric is woven from two different indigo-dyed slub yarns, giving it a depth and uneven texture that recalls fabrics passed down through generations of wear. Variation in stitch direction and Sashiko patterning mimics the natural irregularities of handwork, lending the fabric a sense of intimacy and authenticity. To further this lived-in quality, the cloth undergoes a high-temperature tumbler finish, introducing controlled shrinkage and setting the stage for a rich three-dimensional texture that will evolve uniquely with time.

Each piece of the “Noragi Sashiko” collection seeks to pay homage to the craftsmanship and care given to traditional Japanese clothing from a bygone era.
