Back in April 2020 we released our first
"Wagami" collaboration model with the sword-wielding OGs from Osaka. The original model featured a 17oz. Indigo x Natural indigo Selvedge Denim fabric, which was the impetus for the birth of this denim series. It was a no-brainer on our part to borrow yet another proprietary Selvedge from Samurai’s Book of Five Rings for this latest collaboration.
This concept revolves around the name "Wagami" - Japanese for "oneself". Not only is our hope to create a great looking pair on the surface but to keep some seriously neat details tucked away exclusively for the wearer to enjoy.
For the Wagami 2.0s, we opted for Samurai's proprietary 17oz. Indigo x Black Selvedge , adorned with a bold Gold x Silver Lamé Selvedge ID. Having seen the fabric in person back in early 2020 in Samurai's limited "Musashi" Jeans, we felt this was the perfect weight and hue of Indigo to be featured in our latest iteration of the Wagami series.
With a relaxed top block, and an aggressive taper starting from above the knee, the Comfort Tapered cut was designed & developed by Okayama Denim for Samurai Jeans. Imagine the top block almost as relaxed as a regular straight pair of jeans, with a combination of high rise & ample thigh room. With the taper starting from above the knee, the jeans slim down in the calves to a narrow leg opening.
Using an ensemble of Samurai's metal hardware, including the elusive golden "Otokogi" button, was a great opportunity to showcase the lineup of quintessentially Japanese themed hardware, whilst also giving the button fly section a splash of color!
Pairing with the iron "Matsunoki" (Pine Tree) top button, we opted to use Samurai's Yamato Sakura rivets to keep things stealth. Working closely with Samurai during sampling, we had each rivet specially black coated prior to production. What is special about these rivets is that with time, each one will wear away revealing the original silver sheen - adding yet another element of fading potential to these jeans.
A quick peek at the custom Jacquard pocket bags, featuring numerous motifs used in Samurai's special models from over the years.
Moving to the back of the jeans, we decided to bring back the Black rayon tag with Silver Lamé "Samurai" typography which we had featured on the original "Wagami" Jeans back in 2020.
Lining the back pockets with Selvedge was just the first step!
We're stoked to have been able to bring back the
beautiful “Wagara”, or traditional Japanese inspired fabric for our Wagami model. This is the one detail we truly hope our friends will cherish for themselves, rather than have as a design element to be shown off.
That being said, the hidden arcuates featured in the pockets will provide you with that well deserved flexing opportunity in the future. We have seem some downright insane contrasting fades as a result of these in the past.
