Pure Blue Japan | 17.5oz. Natural Indigo Selvedge Jeans

April 27, 2021

PBJ's coveted Hank-dyed Natural Indigo Selvedge is back with two new iterations of Tokushima's Natural Indigo Yarns, taking center stage for this week's release.
Hank dyeing is a tedious process of hand-dyeing the individual cotton threads in a rope-like fashion.
The entire process is conducted and regulated by the Tokushima Japanese Indigo Artisans who have been recognized as intangible cultural treasures to the country.  Natural Indigo dyeing practices dates back nearly 800 years with each generation of shokunin (craftsman) honing their craft over decades of training.
The process of hank-dyeing in order to achieve the unique hue featured in the Natural Indigo x Light Indigo fabric requires a painstaking process of hand-dipping the yarns used for the warp and weft separately, resulting in  a variegated aesthetic to the hues of the face of this fabric
For the darker color warp, the yarns are typically dipped around 12 times. For the lighter Asagi color featured in the weft, the dip count is around 8 times. However, depending on the season that the yarns are dyed there may be variance in this dip count and each shokunin make changes based on the ambient temperature and humidity of the dyeing factory.
Just like the Natural Indigo x Light Indigo Jeans, the Natural Indigo x Kakishibu version of the jeans will have gone through the same dipping count for the warp and weft of the fabric.
While perhaps possessing less nep compared to our "Super Rough Kakishibu" Jeans (pictured on the left) there is absolutely no shortage of slub with the Kakishibu hues breaking through the lighter indigo fabric face of the new KLAI Jeans.
The persistence that hank dyeing with natural indigo requires, guarantees a denim with a more resilient indigo color than any synthetic indigo dye. While the fading progress of the fabrics will be much slower than standard rope-dyed denim, you can expect one heck of a denim journey with this special piece of craftsmanship.
Both fabrics will be available in PBJ's Slim Tapered -013 (pictured on the left) and Relaxed Tapered -019 (pictured on the right) cuts. Model is pictured wearing a size 30, Raw. He weighs 75kg (165pounds) and is 175cm (5'10") tall.
