In this short clip, a Japanese craftsmen shows us the technique of using a vintage Union Special sewing machine to create a Flat Seam stitch, often found in Cut and Sewn pieces like premium T-shirts and Hooded Sweatshirts (an example can be seen in our Topssection).
In a very basic explanation, a Flat Seam stitch is essentially putting two pieces of fabric together without overlapping the two pieces and stitching them together to create a clean stitch by conjoining the two pieces without showing the raw edges of each piece. Historically, this process of Flat Seam stitching was done by hand until the Union Special Company of Chicago created a Union Special machine to closely replicate this detailed stitch for clothing production.
