New brand alert! | Introducing Plest

Some brands are built by committees. Others are built by one person with a clear point of view and the discipline to follow it through. Plest belongs firmly in the latter camp and a brand that deserves to be championed by yours truly.

Shintaro Shimizu

Founded in 2009 by Shintaro Shimizu, Plest began as a leather-focused label and has since evolved into a tightly controlled, one-man operation producing leather goods, silver jewellery, and original apparel. Every piece reflects Shimizu-san's personal sensibility. Design-wise, Shintaro-san draws deeply from his love of Jamaican soundsystem, ska, and reggae culture. The silhouettes and attitude nod to the effortless style of artists such as Bob Marley, Eek-A-Mouse, and Barrington Levy (to name but a few!). There is a subtle toughness and rhythm to the pieces, a blend of utility and self-expression that feels lived-in rather than styled. The influence is never costume-like. Instead, it informs the mood, proportion, and spirit of the garments and accessories. Now based in Nakameguro, Shintaro-san operates out of a space that functions simultaneously as his atelier, shop, and office. It is both workshop and storefront, a direct extension of the brand’s philosophy. Originally from a quiet town in Nagasaki, he carries that grounded, self-reliant approach into his work today.

For our initial launch, we have selected three denim pieces that best introduce the Plest philosophy. Cut from unsanforized Japanese Selvedge Denim woven in Okayama, the "101" series features original 925 silver buttons, copper rivets, and vintage-style detailing that nods to classic workwear without copying it outright. The indigo version offers the familiar depth and long-term fade potential denimheads expect. The sulfur black brings a sharper, more understated presence with its own distinct aging character, while the ecru version provides a clean counterpoint, highlighting the silhouette and hardware in a completely different way.

The Plest launch collection drops on 3/4 @ Midnight (JST)
