Few periods in denim history are quite as fascinating as the 1940s, when wartime restrictions forced American manufacturers to simplify their designs and make do with limited materials. The Muller & Bros. 542XX 13.5oz. WWII Selvedge Jeans revisit this distinctive chapter of vintage workwear, bringing together the understated character of wartime denim and the meticulous craftsmanship of Japanese manufacturing.

Founded by French vintage clothing enthusiast Stephane Muller in 2014, Muller & Bros. approaches classic American garments through decades of firsthand experience collecting and studying original vintage pieces. The 542XX is a particularly fitting expression of that philosophy, capturing the proportions, materials and construction details that made wartime jeans so distinctive.

The fabric is a 13.5oz. Japanese Selvedge denim woven from 100% cotton, offering a traditional weight with plenty of character and aging potential. Originally unsanforized, the denim has been given a factory wash treatment to address initial shrinkage while retaining its natural texture. As the jeans are worn, the fabric will gradually soften, stretch and develop the individual fading patterns that make traditional indigo denim so appealing. The silhouette stays true to the relaxed proportions of vintage 1940s jeans, featuring a high rise, generous room through the thighs and a straight leg. The result is a comfortable, well-balanced fit that captures the character of early five-pocket denim without feeling overly exaggerated.

Particular attention has been paid to the hardware and construction, with black-painted buttons and rivets recalling the utilitarian character of wartime manufacturing. Contrasting yellow stitching brings definition to the denim, while olive herringbone twill pocket bags and hidden rear pocket rivets provide further period-inspired detailing.
