Founded in 2009 by Shintaro Shimizu, Plest operates as a true one-man brand based in Tokyo, where Shintaro-san designs, patterns, cuts, sews, and finishes his garments himself. The 101 is a direct reflection of that singular authorship and dedication to the craft which includes leather craft, jewellery making and of course, impeccable sewing skills.

Based on classic 1930's era jeans, Shintaro-san has taken particular care to adjust the rise measurement balance between each size in order to maintain a flattering look and fit across the entire range. As the jeans are unsanforized, an emphasis is made on pre-soaking your pair first before embarking on a new denim journey, in order to truly appreciate the patina of the jeans over time. The stitching construction is also a sight to behold. At first glance, the seams appear to be sewn using two needles. However, Shintaro-san only uses a single needle machine, and meticulously sews each side by hand to replicate a vintage aesthetic. With a focus on effortless function, these jeans feature wide side pockets along with a metal cinch back closure for easy waist adjustment.

Each small detail is carefully hand-chosen and integrated into the jeans to represent Shintaro-san's approach to denim production. Using 925 Sterling Silver, each top and fifth coin pocket button is hand-embossed, adding a truly unique construction element to each pair. Shintaro-san has also selected dead-stock copper rivets (typically used in horse saddle construction) and a Talon metal zipper fly opening. Using 1960s deadstock zippers, Shintaro-san painstakingly replaced the older cotton zipper tapes and teeth for longevity, while maintaining the original vintage "Talon" metal pull tab. The red leather seal featured at the back pocket is Shintao-san's personal small salute to Japanese-made denim, purposely shaped in a "Hinomaru" circle and hand-dyed in red piece-by-piece.
