A relatively young brand founded in 2023, Terroir roots its humble beginnings in Fukuyama, Hiroshima as a Natural Indigo dyeing house. What sets Terroir apart from the rest though is their complete approach to producing garments. Long before the yarn is spun or the dye is mixed, the brand tends to its own fields producing the Persicaria Tinctoria plant responsible for yielding the fabled natural indigo dye we love and revere. Once the leaves have been harvested and fermented into Sukumo, the craftsmen at Terroir slowly begin a minimum year long process, beginning by nurturing the dye base for the yarns to weave their respective apparel. This entire process of seed to dye takes the better part of at least a year, with the total yield of useable dye being a fraction of what is harvested on Terroir's farmland.
The persistence that hand dyeing with natural indigo requires, guarantees a fabric with a more resilient indigo color than any chemically-derived indigo dye. This invites for a fabric that will fade very slowly, while gradually revealing the intricacies and variation of hues that natural Indigo has to offer.
