"Onigurumi", or Japanese walnut, has long held a place in rural life and tradition. Known for its tough shells and rich-flavored kernels, it was once an important source of food and oil. Its wood, prized for its strength and grain, has also been used in traditional furniture and tools. Symbolically, the walnut tree is often associated with resilience and endurance.
Momotaro's latest venture into using natural dyes involves taking a natural pigment extracted from the shells and husks of the Onigurumi, and dyeing a 15oz. Denim that starts out as a natural base color. The result is a deep, earthy brown tone that shifts subtly with wear, echoing the organic irregularity and richness of the dye source. As this done by hand, one pair at a time, the color takes on a distinctive depth and texture that cannot be replicated with synthetic dyes.
