For our latest mashup with Japan's sword-wielding denim brand, we used the leftover margin of last year's "Arakage" jeans to produce a limited run of our "Shinobi" Jeans. With the name "ninja" popularized around the world to describe the inconspicuous and covert warriors that were commonplace during feudal Japan, they are indeed referred to rather as Shinobi in all historical texts and references from the era. Translating to “Rough Shadow” in Japanese, 荒影 (or “Arakage”), this is Samurai’s latest heavyweight foray into the darker depths of Japanese selvedge denim. Clocking in at a substantial 18oz., the warp is a classic rope-dyed indigo yarn, while the weft is a black yarn dyed in sulphur. The resulting stealth aesthetic yielded from the yarn composition, is one that will guarantee some high contrast fades with extended wear.

Featuring a relaxed top block, with an aggressive taper starting from above the knee, the Comfort Tapered cut was designed by Okayama Denim for Samurai Jeans. Imagine the top block almost as relaxed as a regular straight pair of jeans, with a combination of high rise & ample thigh room. With the taper starting from above the knee, the jeans slim down in the calves to a narrow leg opening.

Opting for the custom blackout “Sakura” rivets produced exclusively for our collaboration series, the craziest detail brings together all of the elements for this collaboration. We tucked a beautiful “Wagara”, or traditional Japanese-inspired fabric into the back pockets. It’s a detail we want you to cherish and enjoy for yourself, and admire possibly when you take the pair off. Not a detail that is meant to be shown off to the world. They are pair of jeans with details meant to be enjoyed by a fellow denim nerd. To further emphasize the Shinobi theme, we dug deep into more subtle elements of the jeans. When selecting the chainstitching color, we opted to choose contrasting and tonal stitching as a representation of the Shinobi. Considered a formidable and ruthless force of the night by their foe, but disciplined and tactful by their masters. Moving to the pocket bags, we saw an opportunity to pay homage to the Shonobi's iconic arsenal of weaponry - in particular the Shuriken, which is featured in the custom-made Jacquard fabric of the pocket bags.
