The AI in the model code of this pair reflects the word Aizome, or indigo dye. The cotton yarns (Warp & Weft) used to weave the fabric of these jeans are hank dyed in natural indigo, by dyeing craftsmen in Tokushima, Japan. With hank dyeing, the yarns are dipped repeatedly until the deep blue color of the natural indigo has settled throughout the cotton. In the case of the AI's, they have had the dipping process repeated a minimum of 25 times to establish the deep hue of Indigo blue.

The persistence that hand dyeing with natural indigo requires, guarantees a denim with a more resilient indigo color than any chemical indigo dye. The lengthy duration for the preparation of the dye, as well as a limited annual supply (the dye used on the AI's are exclusively sourced from Japanese-grown Indigofera plant leaves) make natural indigo denim very special and sought after.

This Aizome jean is a classic styled "raindrop" with the slubs from the weft poking out in a falling rain pattern. It is very cool up close and cool far away visually. In the texture department it is very slubby and feels nice against your legs as you go about your day. My only complaint is that I had a few slubs that were too far out and I will have to take tweezers to the weft in order correct those so that the slub is on the inside rather than out where an errant rubbing could break and pull those threads damaging the jean. Aside from that I really like these, they've become a weekly wear to me.

Exactly the fit i was searching for, after a wash it was precisely the way i wanted a pair of jeans to look and feel. While the weight of the fabric as listed would seem heavy, they don't actually wear that way, softer and more supple than I would have thought. And again, the speed of delivery while including a hem to length, is astonishing. Okayama, hands down the best site for Japanese Denim!
