In 1868 the 260-year rule of Japan by the Tokugawa Shogunate, also known as the Edo era came to an end with the Emperor's restoration to the Chrysanthemum Throne, ushering in the Meiji era. Japan quickly evolved from a feudal society to a modernized, industrial nation in the space of just 5 years. Everything from architecture and clothing, to academia and food, saw drastic changes as a result of Western influence.
In 1872, Japan's first railroad saw completion providing an accessible means of transport from Yokohama to Shimbashi station in Tokyo. Steam locomotives from the United Kingdom heralded the beginning of major railroad networks across the country, some of which still exist to this day. Celebrating 150 years since railroads were first introduced in the country, Studio D'Artisan pays homage to one of Japan's most treasured assets with their latest "Railroad" collection.
