Samurai Jeans once again tap into Japan's history, paying homage to the Shinsengumi (新選組, New Select Brigade), who were a special police force formed during the late 1800s under the Tokugawa Shogunate. The "Ikedaya Incident" Selvedge Jeans pay homage to an armed encounter in Kyoto which forever changed the course of Japanese history.
In amidst the chaotic political climate of 1864, breakaway groups of masterless Samurai (Ronin) began banding together in an attempt to stage a revolutionary coup in Kyoto. Ultimately, the splinter-group aimed to not only assassinate all those sympathetic to the Tokugawa Shogunate, but to burn down Kyoto in its entirety. Prior to the night of July 8th 1864, members of the Shinsengumi had captured and tortured a member of the conspirators group which granted them the vital intel to lead the brigade to the Ikedaya Inn, where the members had gathered for the night.
Led by Kondo Isami, a revered and fearless leader of the Shinsengumi, two groups of the brigade surrounded the Inn before charging in. A stream of men wearing the famous Asagi blue and white Haori jackets stormed into the tight quarters of the Inn before clashing swords with the conspirators. Whilst heavily outnumbered, the element of surprise and sheer skill of the Shinsengumi’s swordsmen gave them the upper hand. While most members of the conspirators' group chose to fight to the death, the sheer chaos lead to some members escaping the Inn. The fight eventually spilled out into the Kyoto streets with onlookers staring in sheer disbelief.
In a final showdown on the famous Sanjo Bridge, the Shinsengumi came out on top the victors with most members of the revolutionary cell now dead or captured. In total, the Shinsengumi lost a single swordsman in their battle to restore order in Kyoto. If their past accolades had not done so already, this event cemented the brigade’s place in Japanese history.
The second release in Samurai's "Shinsengumi" series, the 18oz. extra-Slubby "Makoto" Selvedge fabric was created from scratch, just like the grassroots formation of the Shinsengumi.
The eye-catching shade of blue and red seen in the Selvedge ID was carefully selected by Samurai to pay homage to the instantly recognizable light-capri blue (浅葱色, Asagi-iro) haori that the Shinsengumi donned on top of their battle regalia. The red color is symbolic of the red "Makoto" battle standard that was carried into battle.
In similar fashion, Samurai have reimagined the Asagi blue Haori that the Shinsengumi wore, for the pocket bags that are featured in the jeans.
Cut in Samurai's S510 silhouette, the cut offers ample room in the top block and thighs, completed with a classic straight leg.
