With the discontinuation of the beloved Tompkins knit series after the single craftsman eligible to operate the knitting machine retired last year, there was a void in the Loop & Weft series that needed immediate attention. After countless visits and persistent communication with cotton jersey knit developers in Wakayama, a collaboration with a former hosiery factory began the process of reviving old Sinker knitting machines common to Japan in the 1970s.
While retaining the über fluffy hand feel and texture of the original Tompkins sweat fabric, the revived Sinker method creates a beautiful loop structure that optimizes the best that the vintage Sinker knitting machines have to offer. With the revival also came updated calibration to the half-a-century-old knitting machines, eliminating inconsistencies that were commonplace during that foregone era, yielding a balanced brushed fleece fabric.
With a four-needle flat seamer machine commanding the construction throughout these sweatshirts, the seam construction coupled with the updated calibration of the knitting process provides a fabric and garment that will be equal parts durable while maintaining the original structure even after countless wears & washes.
