Hitting the OD shelves this week, we have a revered pair of jeans making its return from the Samurai camp.
The initial release of the 19oz. "Kiwami" (meaning pinnacle in Japanese) Selvedge Jeans earned its place in denim history back in 2003 as the heaviest oz. weight jeans at the time. When these were first released, Samurai opted to use the same no. 6 warp and weft composition of the 15oz. S0510XX fabric at the time. However, Samurai quickly received feedback from clients that this iteration was highly abrasive and generally uncomfortable to wear.
Going back to the drawing board, Samurai sought to rectify these issues whilst keeping the fabric at the same record-breaking 19oz. weight. The updated version which was released in 2004, featured a combination of a highly twisted no. 5 warp and no. 4 weft yarn. The result was a rough textured fabric face which maintained a soft inner layer. While undoubtably stiff initially, Denimheads around the world have commented that is one of the most comfortable heavyweight fabrics after extended wear.
Mimicking the glint of a Samurai's sword, the jeans feature Samurai's popular silver lamé "Katana-mimi" Selvedge ID.
Impeccably crafted, the fly features Samurai's Iron "Hinode" metal buttons which will age in tandem with the jeans over time.
While the renewed S710XX19oz-II model for 2021 no longer features Samurai's red rayon tag from previous seasons, an updated tab is featured on the back right pocket along with tonal stitching arcuates.
Cut in the fan-favorite "S710" silhouette, balance of fit is maintained by retaining a reasonably spacious top block and gradual taper throughout the leg. Samurai have also maintained the classic length inseam for this model at 38 inches, perfect for the taller Denimheads out there.
